This follows earlier reports indicating that an M5 Pro variant is also in development, hinting that we may soon witness the arrival of the next generation of Apple’s compact desktop computer.
Despite my satisfaction with the M1 Mac mini, the prospect of upgrading to an M5 model is increasingly tempting. Early indications suggest that the new model will arrive at an opportune moment, equipped with features that justify the investment.

A Compact Powerhouse
The Mac mini is already recognized as the top mini PC available, and it stands out for good reason. Its powerful, efficient chips provide performance that far exceeds expectations for such a small device. With its minimal footprint, it occupies little space on desks, even when compared to other compact computers. Made with high-quality materials and featuring a sturdy aluminum chassis, it currently retails for $599, which is $100 less than what I paid for the M1 model, making it an exceptional value.
While the M4 chip is impressive, the anticipated M5 chip promises even greater enhancements. Rumors suggest that it may offer a performance boost of 15-25% over the M4, along with the inclusion of Thunderbolt 5 and Wi-Fi 7 in entry-level models. This upgrade, while modest, is expected to be significant.
No Need for a New Look
Although there won’t be any redesign for the Mac mini, this doesn’t concern me. The existing design, which is less than a year old and still looks fantastic, doesn’t necessitate any changes. The adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” certainly applies here.
The timing of these new Mac mini developments is perfect for my upgrade plans. My M1 Mac mini, now five years old, struggles with more demanding tasks. Recently, I tested the macOS version of Cyberpunk 2077 on two Macs: my MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip and an iMac powered by the M4 chip. Surprisingly, the M1 Pro outperformed the M4 due to its additional graphics cores, demonstrating impressive capability despite being from an earlier generation.

This launch could coincide with my plans to upgrade. I’m considering the MacBook Pro featuring the M6 Pro chip, as its anticipated combination of high performance and OLED display could create an ideal gaming machine. Additionally, I’m looking to enhance my desktop PC from 2021, which struggles to meet my performance expectations with its RTX 3070 graphics card.
However, with the exciting prospects for the new Mac mini, prioritizing Apple’s compact desktop might be the more challenging choice to resist. Overall, it’s an exhilarating time to be a devoted tech enthusiast.
