Experiencing interruptions in your Wi-Fi connection can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you need to reconnect and are faced with the task of entering a password that you may not have used in a long time. Wi-Fi has become an essential part of our daily lives, and losing access can disrupt our online activities significantly. Fortunately, both Mac and Windows devices allow users to quickly retrieve their saved Wi-Fi passwords. Whether you’ve been disconnected from your network or need to share the password with a friend, your computer has securely stored that information, making it easier for you to get back online, whether for streaming, work, or other activities.

Locating Wi-Fi Passwords on Mac

All saved Wi-Fi passwords on a Mac can be found in the Keychain Access application, which serves as the password management tool for macOS. To access your Wi-Fi passwords, follow these steps: begin by utilizing the search function to open the Keychain Access app. Once inside, proceed by selecting “Wi-Fi” from the left sidebar. Locate the specific Wi-Fi network whose password you wish to retrieve, then either hover over the concealed password to view and copy it, or click the “show” option to generate a QR code that can be scanned for easy connection on another device.

Retrieving Wi-Fi Passwords on Windows

Finding the password for the Wi-Fi network you are currently connected to on a Windows device is straightforward. However, accessing all of your saved Wi-Fi passwords requires a bit more effort. To view the password for your current connection, click the Start button and navigate to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center (for Windows 11) or Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network and Sharing Center (for Windows 10). Once there, click on the highlighted name of your Wi-Fi network next to “Connections.” This will lead you to the Wi-Fi Status page; from here, click on “Wireless Properties,” then navigate to the Security tab. Finally, check the box labeled “Show characters” to reveal your Wi-Fi network password.

While the aforementioned method allows access to the current Wi-Fi password, there is an alternative way to recover the passwords for all networks you’ve ever connected to on a Windows computer. To do this, right-click on the Windows icon located in the taskbar and select “Windows Terminal (Admin).” In the terminal window, type in the command netsh wlan show profile and press Enter to display a list of all Wi-Fi networks you have connected to in the past. Once you identify the desired network, type the command netsh wlan show profile “(Wi-Fi network name)” key=clear (for instance, netsh wlan show profile “Netgear667” key=clear) and hit Enter. This will reveal various settings related to the profile, including connectivity and security details, with the Wi-Fi password listed under the “Security settings” section next to “Key Content.”

In addition to the Windows Terminal, users can also utilize the Command Prompt application to execute the aforementioned commands to retrieve their Wi-Fi passwords.
